Alh. Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the sudden increase in the rate of suicide among Nigerian youth. The one time presidential candidate emphasized that parents and community should pay close attention to the young ones, most especially in this “depressing times”.
News of young people taking their lives surfaced rampantly on social media. One of which a christian worship leader was the victim of depression. Mr Micheal allegedly took his life after a photo of him with another woman surfaced months before his wedding. This is contrary to the popular rumor that the minister committed suicide over unpaid house rent.
Alhaji Atiku wrote this on twitter,
“The rate of suicide among our youth is worrisome. I believe that as parents and community, we need to pay close attention for early signs of depression among our young people, particularly in this depressing times. -AA”.
In reaction to the news of a 300-level medical student who committed suicide after he failed MBBS examination. The student, Uzakah Timi of Niger Delta university took a plunge into a river close to the school at Bayelsa. 50 students, out of the 169 who sat for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) exam, failed the examination.
