Before the 2019 General election was postponed, thugs attacked INEC office in Obot-akara LGA in Akwa-Ibom. The attack which led to the death of two persons and the burning of cars occurred where the INEC officials and supporters were waiting to receive sensitive election material coming from Uyo.
This happened before elections were shifted to 23rd February and it is the main reason for the postponement.
INEC during press briefing revealed that the attacks on her offices and material forced them to postpone the election in order to avoid staggered election that would put the wrong person in power. Although the commission received pressure from the federal government to go ahead with the election, INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, stood for the democracy and postponed the election dates.
