Shegu Shagari’s death – Nigerians reacts online

The former and first Democratic president of Nigeria Alhaji Shehu Shagari has died. He died yesterday at the National Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness, his son revealed.

Shehu Shagari was the president of Nigeria during the second republic of Nigeria October 1st, 1979. His regime was overthrowned by a coup led by Buhari, a dictator on 31st December, 1983. The coup made Buhari, incumbent President of Nigeria, the head of state then.

The news of the demise of Shehu Shagari was made known by his son Bello Shagari on Twitter yesterday where he wrote,

“I regret announcing the death of my grandfather, H.E Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who died right now after brief illness at the National hospital, Abuja.”

He further announced that his father will be buried today by 2:00pm at Shagari local government in Sokoto. Bello wrote,

“The burial of the late Alhaji Shehu Shagari holds tomorrow 29th December 2019, by 2pm at Shagari Local Government Inshaa Allah.”

Online Tributes to Alhaji Shehu Shagari

Most Nigerians excluding the incumbent president have taken to social media to pen down their heartfelt condolences to the former president.

The Senate President of Nigeria, senator Bukola Saraki wrote,

“Inalilahi wa inailehi Rajiun. My family and I join the entire nation to mourn the passing of former President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who led our nation during the Second Republic.

President Shagari, was a quintessential public servant; having served in seven cabinet positions and as a legislator. He dedicated his best years in the service of our nation and its people. May Allah grant him a place among the righteous ones in Aljannah Firdaus.”

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce also wrote on Twitter,
“I met President Shehu Shagari at Dr Alex Ekwueme’s home. He was very soft spoken and humble. Nigeria would have gone far if he had not been overthrown. A great leader. He brought the Igbos back to prominence after the civil war by making one of them VP. May his soul rest in peace”

The President of Nigeria from 27 August 1985 to 26 August 1993, Ibrahim Babangida wrote,
“Former President, Shehu Shagari was really a man of integrity, substance and sense; his services to this great nation is worth admiring, mostly the role he played in bringing more Shelter (Shagari Estate) to Nigerians. Rest In Peace, Your Excellency.”

It came as a shock as Murtala Mohammed Airport in Ikeja Lagos State went into stone age for five hours. The airport experienced power outage which forced the terminal to switch to manual for continuity.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, Henrietta Yakubu, said that the power failure was due to a “minor electrical fault”.

Sahara Reporters reported that sources close to the terminal reveal that some of the passengers had to pull off their shirt especially the males and use hand fans.

Phew.

Yakubu further stated that FAA  engineers were already working to rectify the “minor electrical fault”, assuring the public that normalcy would be restored soon.

Yakubu added by saying that the outage did not affect normal flight operations at the airport and flight operations continued uninterrupted.

Well, the terminal crew switched to manual.

But recall that the Presbyterian Church of U.S.A has conformed to same sex marriage as enforced by  law.

Frank Mba immediately replaced Moshood Jimoh who has occupied the position since 2017 as appointed by former NPF IGP – Ibrahim Idris. Jimoh took over from Sogbeba West.
