According to an eye witness who pleaded anonymity,he stated that few minutes after the armed robbers had gained entrance to the room,an argument occurred ;an interception with the robbers by the victim. In this process, he was hit with a cutlass on the head. he eyewitness stated that the victim should have survived it but a lot of irregularities after the incidence caused his death. He stated that the irregularities started when there was no vehicle /patrol van to take him from the hostel to any nearby hospital. Both the Nigeria Police and the OAU security officers complained of FAULTY patrol van”” He emphasized. He stated that the victim was first taken by a bike before the University Chief Security officer brought his private car to pick the Victim. OAU Peeps News Agency gathered that the victim was first taken to the university health centre before being transfered to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex around 3am. It was gathered that the health officials at the OAUTHC didn’t treat the case as an emergency as they kept asking for frivolities like money for blood transfusion, etc which left the victim to be unattended to for more than 5hrs. Late Abiodun Babalola was finally attended to around 8am since 3am but he eventually gave up the ghost by 9am,Saturday,22nd December, 2018.
Majority of OAU Students have blamed the re-occuring lackadaisical attitude of the staffs of OAUTHC to students It will be recalled that this is not the first case of students not being attended to on emergencies at the university teaching hospital. Some Students also blamed the university management for not mounting pressure on the Nigeria Police Force to provide adequate security for students staying off-campus.
Mr Funso Adegboye, the Ile-Ife Police Area commander confirmed the incidence. He stated there was a robbery attack, the victim was injured ,rushed to the hospital but eventually gave up the ghost. Speaking extensively with the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju , he stated that it is a sad incident to the university community at large to a lose a student of the university especially towards this festive Period of the year. The University Public Relations Officer thanked everyone that tried all their possible best to save the life of the victim & added that this is not a right time to shift blame on anyone for the loss of the victim stating that “Man Proposes but God disposes”. Expressing fatherly agony , the Vice Chancellor,Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, said people should place the fear of God far and above worldly materials, wondering what sort of earthly possession would make a man to attack, maim and kill his fellowman.
He, thereafter, on behalf of the Council, Senate, Staff, Students and the entire University Community, prayed that the Lord would grant eternal rest to the late Abiodun Babalola and the parents and family members the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Hours after student’s murder in a robbery attack, another students’ area in town has been attacked by armed robbers in the early hours of today,24th December ,2018 with hours of sporadic shooting at Oduduwa Estate along Ede road, ile-ife,Osun State. OAU Students have however clamoured for more adequate security measures to prevent loss of lives and properties as majority of students now stay off-campus due to the new accommodation policy by the university management.
