In 2011, a young chinese man, Xiao Wang who was so desperate for an Apple iPhone 4 sold his kidney to get one, now he is dying. iPhone 4 which Apple Inc had released on 24th June, 2010 at that time was everyone’s delight.
17-year old Xiao Wang made a deal that raised him enough cash to purchase the device, but at a very high cost of his kidney. His family didn’t have the cash for iPhone 4, so he took the leap.
Mr Wang actually sold one of his kidneys for $3,200 USD at that time. In 2011, $3,200 USD amounts to approximately 528,000 naira. However due to tripled exchange rate, $3,200 now amounts to about N1.2m.
Wang got enough money which was actually more than enough for him to purchase the iPhone 4 which cost $500 at most, 82,000 naira.
iPhone 4 was a status symbol at Wang’s school, which is why he wanted one so badly.
The kidney operation was successfully carried out at in an underground hospital; Wang was told that after a week of recovery, he’d be able to “live a normal life” with just one kidney.
Unfortunately, the operation was carried out in a contaminated environment making Wang develop complications in his other kidney which now threatenes his life.
Now, 24 years of age, Xiao Wang will never live a normal life, and while he received a settlement from the hospital, he will need to continue with dialysis which his family is struggling to pay for. Wang is now on dialysis for the rest of his short-term life.
